Why the scale is sabotaging your fat loss.

Why the scale is sabotaging your fat loss.

by Raymond M. Binkowski

The answer is a resounding yes. How can that be? The scale measures your weight. It is more than happy to tell you if you have gained weight or lost weight. But it never tells you exactly what that weight is. Is it Fat, Muscle, Water? Measuring a change in body weight is useful. A change in weight is only part of the fat loss picture. A person can lose fat AND muscle. Yes the scale has gone down, but so has their metabolism. Muscle regulates metabolism so the loss of muscle is very bad for long-term fat loss (www.fitworkz.com/files/news/Metabolism.pdf). It is possible to be Skinny and Fat. Remember the benefits of a nice physique extend beyond appearance, the risk for all disease is increased by being Fat. Disease does not discriminate between skinny fat or big fat. Successful long term fat loss is gaining muscle and losing fat. It is common to see the scale actually go up (or the amount of muscle), if one is on the right track to fat loss. This is a great thing, contrary to what many would say about fat loss. Countless times female clients after a month of training will comment that the scale has gone up, yet they are fitting into jeans 2 sizes smaller than when they started. The scale should be used to track progress. But so should body fat analysis (set up a time info@fitworkz.com). So be sure to get your body fat checked. Skin fold calipers are the best. They measure the thickness of your fat. The more sites checked the better (we check 9 sites at FitWorkz.com). Tracking changes in your skin folds along with the scale will paint a true picture of your fat loss. Remember one pound of fat weighs the same as one pound of muscle. They both weigh a pound. Muscle is much denser than fat. What does that mean??? Consider 1 pound of muscle a golf ball and one pound of fat a basketball. Picture the difference. Now picture that difference on your body. Imagine how different you would look if you lost 5 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle. How about the impact 5 more pounds of muscle would have on your metabolism??? Successful fat loss means adding more muscle, reducing risk for disease, and building a tight toned body.
