Whats The Fat Cellulite Connection?

Whats The Fat Cellulite Connection?

by Marie Watkins

Well, the first thing you need to understand is that cellulite is fat, plain and simple. Although the dimpled, puckered skin is considered by many to be cellulite, it actually isnt. The whole orange-peel look of the skin is only the outer manifestation of cellulite fat.

Now, weve all seen the celeb exposed pictures where photos are printed of celebrities looking less than air brushed perfect in their bikinis but most of these women are slim, if not skinny. So how do they have cellulite, as they would not be classed as fat?

Cellulite is not something that only fat people get. Anyone can develop cellulite, even skinny celebrities.

The term 'fat' and 'cellulite' may only be differentiated by the fact that cellulite is just one of the most visible types of fat. Although our body contains other fat, cellulite is what most people observe. This is because cellulite occurs pretty near the top layer of the skin. There are three layers of fat under our skin, the subcutaneous fat layer, which is just under the epidermis and dermis layers of skin, and then two reserve layers of fat that sit above the muscle. Cellulite forms in the subcutaneous level of fat.

Fat is formed when the body takes in more energy than it uses and the excess energy is stored as fat. Although most fat is stored inside the body, a percentage is accumulated just under the skin and this fat becomes cellulite.

The reason for the dimpled appearance is that the fat just under the skin is held in a different form than the fat in the reserve layers. The reserve layer fats are free form, whereas the fat in the subcutaneous layer is held in compartments that are separated by connective tissues.

The dimpled skin of cellulite forms when there are excess fat cells, toxins and fluids in the subcutaneous compartments, which leads to swelling and pressure being placed on the connective tissues. These eventually stretch and harden, pulling the skin in a downwards direction causing the dimpled appearance.

How exactly do people transform fat into cellulite? Well, the main factor that experts have observed is hormonal change. Different hormones regulate the way which we consume energy. These hormones also determine how and where energy is stored. Because of sudden hormonal changes, fat can be stored in the skin leading to cellulite.

What other culprits make up the link between fat and cellulite? Well, there is also aging. Everyone has fatty deposits under the skin. However, these fatty deposits develop into cellulite when the skin looses its elasticity with aging. When a person grows older, the fatty deposits tend to become more visible and the fat becomes cellulite.

While being overweight does not cause cellulite, if a person has cellulite and is also overweight the appearance of cellulite can often be magnified. However, it is worth noting that losing weight does not always improve the appearance of cellulite. So, when it comes to losing fat, cellulite doesnt always disappear.
