The Low Carb Diet Summarized
by Emily Kushnarova
After being educated to stick to a low-fat diet, Americans are now the fattest people on earth, and getting fatter each year. More worryingly, the occurrences of diabetes is also increasing. As a result, it is believed that over 30 million Americans have taken up some sort of low carb diet.
If you are thinking of starting a reduced carb diet, some background information may be of use.
So, lets take a brief look at the weight control benefits of reduced carbohydrate diet plans and try to discern whether the reduced carbohydrate angle on weight control is better than the more orthodox low fat diet regimes.
Why is the Reduced carbohydrate Diet regime popular?
Most people enjoy being slim and healthy, but everyone hates dieting, unsurprisingly.
With the atkins diet (and other reduced carb diets), the claim is that you may eat as much fat and protein as you like and still reduce your weight. In simple terms, on a reduced carb diet, you can eat as much as you want, providing that you only eat approved foods.
Is it any wonder that low carb diets are so succesful.
Mostly, people diet for two main reasons, to become thin, or to become healthier, or in some cases, both. Some nutritionalists believe that the atkins diet lets you reduce weight rapidly, but at the risk of permanent damage to your health.
Not surprisingly, supporters of the Atkins diet hold that it is perfectly safe and extremely effective. They claim that modern society is not ailing from a failure to do exercise, but has decided to eat more carbohydrates, which, as a result, make you more hungry and leads to even more eating.
Some believers in the low carbohydrate diet hold that it is a closer match to the diet that we followed during the early stages of our evolution, and as a result is closer to what nature intended. They state that the Diet of paleolithic times would not have included refined sugar and starches, and that we have probably not changed significantly since the very early neolithic period, proving that their consumption must be avoided in the present day and that consuming them can cause horrible and largely unknown consequences.
The dietary elite are not yet willing to change their stated opinions, but a flurry of recent diet studies have taken an objective look at the supposed problems of the Atkins diet, and the results have been little short of astounding: dieters on the Atkins diet lose weight and stay healthy.
The low carbohydrate diet supporters say that there are also quite a few completely scientific reports illustrating that a low carbohydrate diet such as the popular atkins diet may indeed lead to significant and continued loss of weight.
Its hard to know who to believe as both parties can fall back on medical studies that appear to support their respective positions.
