The Difference between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and inflammatory Bowel Disease

Family doctors often have difficulty in differentiating between inflammatory bowel disease and Irritable bowel syndrome. Most patients are referred to a specialist if the doctor is concerned with the severity of the symptoms. It is difficult to differentiate between ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease as the symptoms are so closely linked (both are referred to as IBD). A colonoscopy is one way of getting a clear diagnosis and other tests are often necessary.
Crohns can affect all the layers of the intestinal wall whereas ulcerative colitis affects only the inner lining of the colon. Crohns disease can involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. Irritable bowel syndrome is a disturbance in the regulation of bowel function, and affects the intestines and can result in one or more of the following symptoms, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping and constipation.
