For portion control dieting, you will need a few simple kitchen tools. You can purchase an inexpensive food scale for under ten dollars, and you should have plenty of measuring cups on hand. When you need to estimate your serving sizes, use these guidelines:

* the tip of your thumb is approximately one ounce of cheese or one tablespoon of salad dressing.

* one serving of chicken, about three ounces, is equivalent to the size of the palm of your hand.

* a tennis ball is about the amount of rice or pasta you need for a serving with your meal.

Be careful when estimating; most of the time, you should use the proper tools to measure out your food.

Serving sizes do not apply to the food you order at restaurants. Restaurants over-deliver on the food off their menu, so a good idea is to put half of your meal in a to-go box before you start eating. Keep it off your plate, and you wont be tempted to over-indulge.

After youve compiled a list of your most commonly eaten foods, highlight your healthiest options. Now, when planning your meals for the day, choose from this healthier list to get faster results.
