Low-carb candy or one addicts endeavor to beat heredity

by Marci Crane

Low-carb candy or one addicts endeavor to beat heredity

Candy... mmm chocolate... and cake, and cookies, and... Ah yess...! Oh sorry, I tend to get carried away just dreaming about all those delectable treats loaded with heavenly carbohydrates. I think you may have me figured out by now, no further explanation necessary: I am a carb addict. As 'luck' (and nature) would have it, I am also at a much higher risk for developing diabetes and heart disease in my old age. My dad, aunts, grandparents - all pleasantly plump sweet lovers, as well as exercise and low-carb candy haters when young - acquired the full bouquet of troubles later in life. Based on the telltale signs (the above description fits me perfectly), I am going to become yet another statistic... unless I get serious about my health, eradicate my unhealthy habits and learn to love low-carb candy.

Easier said than done; yall carb addicts out there know what Im talkin about. Im sure though many of you can also relate to my health concerns. Thats how it usually goes in life: if you love something too much, you cant have it. How fair is that?! Forget it, we also know another truism: life just isnt fair! GET OVER IT!! Sorry, Im yelling at myself, otherwise I tend to conveniently not hear. I plan to start exercising when spring blooms and sunshine put me in the right frame of mind. I even went as far as watched the video I ordered, so Im mentally prepared... hey, stop laughing! At least, I mean it right now.

Seriously though, I needed a plan to at least cut out the unhealthy foods from my diet; gotta start somewhere. Oh how on earth was I going to say no to sugar! Yeah sure, theres all that low-carb candy and cookies out there now, but no way they taste as good as the real thing and will replace my beloved sweets, right? I must stop this whining and think positively. Like Dr. Phil says, to beat one addiction, develop a new, healthier addiction to take its place. So, I developed a systematic scientific approach to finding my ultimate low-carb candy bar, and acquiring a new healthy addiction.

I seriously doubted Id find low-carb candy that tastes just like real chocolate bars, without the unpleasant aftertaste and gritty texture. I was sure it was a tall order to fill, but boy was I wrong! Really, several years of technological advances, and you wont believe the heights low-carb candy has climbed! Granted, finding your ideal treat is a process of weeding out some false claims and bad-tasting snacks, but as I discovered, there were also quite a few winners. Keep in mind, its not just about taste tests. Pay close attention to the ingredients to avoid doing more harm than good. I recently found out that the low-fat yogurts that claim to be healthy often contain over 40g of sugar per serving! Luckily, I like plain yogurt. The reverse is true for low-carb candy bars - in lieu of sugar some products may slip you those evil trans fats, sugar alcohols and other fillers that are likely to be more unhealthy than moderate amounts of natural sugar. Develop your awareness and shrewdly pursue your dream, and I promise you theres life after low-carb candy.

Believe it or not, there were several low-carb candy products I fell in love with. Their creamy, luscious texture and genuine, no-aftertaste sweetness makes me look forward to dessert every day. I also feel good about their wholesome ingredients, and even dropped a couple of pounds. Now, its a matter of personal taste, so conduct your own research and taste tests, but I almost guarantee that theres something out there for everyone. With Valentines Day quickly approaching, treat yourself and your carb-challenged friends and loved ones to awesome gourmet treats. We are lucky to be living during such fascinating times.
