Herbology Training in America
by CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd
Herbology training can be acquired through community workshops and seminars, correspondence courses, and through natural healing colleges or herbal schools. Depending on the herbology training program in which you enroll, you can anticipate varying levels of education and a broad range of curriculums.
In basic herbology training courses, students will be introduced to common herbs, herbal remedies and how to integrate herbs into daily life. In more comprehensive herbology training programs, candidates can gain hands-on education to become herbal and natural health consultants, and professional herbalists.
Courses involved in herbology training include fundamentals of herbs, herbal medicine manufacturing, herbology, herb identification, and other natural health therapies. A number of Chinese herbology training program provide these instructions, as well as theories and philosophy of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), and Yin/Yang tonic herbs and formula. In addition, in a Chinese herbology training course, students will gain an introduction to Chinese medicine and herbology, as well as therapeutic principles of Chinese herbology.
While each academic program varies from school to school, in-depth Western and Chinese herbology training can lead to certification and/or degree* (herbology training degrees not available at all colleges or institutions). In the vast majority of certified herbology training courses, one can expect an educational emphasis on case studies, in addition to comprehensive principles and applications of herbal medicine.
As with any academic plan, it is always wise for students to examine potential schools and seminars that offer herbology training. Though a number of these classes may be completed in as little as a few weeks; more advanced herbology training programs may last up to 2 years.
Whether one chooses to pursue a degree, certificate or personal enrichment, herbology training can help individuals to gain an overall understanding into how herbs can effectively be used both as natural healing remedies and in daily nutrition.
