Do You Want a Tummy Tuck? Ask the Right Questions First!
by Lynn Huber
Keep in mind that a tummy tuck isnt a small procedure. Its major surgery that includes anesthesia and a fairly long recovery. So its not something to consider lightly.
What can a tummy tuck do? If youve lost quite a bit of weight a tummy tuck is a great way to remove and tighten that excess skin. Its also good for tightening abdominal muscles that have been stretched due to childbirth. If you have excess skin, youre going to get a better result with a tummy tuck than you will with liposuction. Liposuction works for smaller pockets of fat but it cannot take care of excess hanging skin.
There are things that cant be improved with a tummy tuck. Even though many tummy tucks are combined with liposuction, nothing can take care of intra-abdominal fat except for diet and exercise. What is intra-abdominal fat? Its fat that centers around your abdominal organs. Its the most dangerous kind of fat and not matter what kind of surgical procedure youre considering, youll still need to diet and exercise to reduce this fat that is most dangerous to your health.
Recovery from a tummy tuck is fairly lengthy. Youll be down flat on your back for at least two weeks, and then moving slowly for a good 4 weeks after that. Although your body may look better, the final results wont be known for up to a year. Youll have some swelling and discomfort for almost 6 months. But, most women will say that they feel great about how they look after about the 3rd week.
If youre considering a tummy tuck, you might want to ask yourself these questions before making your decision.
1. Can I afford this? It can cost $8000.00 and up although there are numerous financing plans available if you would rather make payments than pay up front.
2. Can I take 6 weeks to rest? Even though you can probably start working a bit earlier its tough. It took me three weeks before I really felt like doing much, and a full six before I started to get back to normal.
3. Will the scar bother me? The trade off for a flat tummy is a scar all the way across your abdomen. I have to admit that my scar bothers me, but its still worth it.
4. How supportive will my husband/partner be? Youll need help and a lot of it for the first couple of weeks.
5. Am I comfortable telling people what Im doing? Some women are, some arent, but you need to know what youre going to say before you do this.
If youve decided to go ahead with the surgery, do your homework. Visit numerous surgeons until you find the one thats right for you. Ask as many questions as you can and make sure you can call them or email with more questions if you need to before you make your decision.
1. How long will they expect you to be in bed? Off work?
2. Do they offer financing?
3. Do they have 'before and after' pictures of other surgeries?
4. What kind of results can you expect?
5. What is the recovery process?
6. Will you stay in the hospital overnight?
7. What kind of help will you need at home?
Get the idea? The more informed you are, the better off youll be.
And youll be on the way to a brand new You!
