Diet Shortcuts - Are They Healthy?
by Sydney Heiden
When it comes to losing weight, many people turn to diet pills. They look at it as 'Better Living Through Chemistry' and hope that this time, the magic pills do their job. They take the pill and expect the next morning to wake up skinny. It just doesnt happen.
Unfortunately, losing weight takes effort. The only real way to lose weight is to either cut down on the calories or increase the metabolism. The magic diet pills dont do either. If they do manage to raise your metabolism, it is usually by increasing the caffeine intake which can result in increased heart rate and higher blood pressure.
Diet pills can also have numerous adverse affects, such as heart valve defects, high blood pressure, irritability just to name a few. Some of the affects are short term, others are long term. Sometimes the adverse reactions can be canceled when you stop using the pills, but other times, the damage is permanent. Remember Phen-Phen in the 90s. Many people had permanent heart damage and some even died as a result of taking the diet pills. This is a terribly high price to pay for attempting to lose weight.
Most doctors will tell you that the best way to lose weight is through exercise. It doesnt take a lot, just some simple walking or bike riding. The additional benefits to exercise include lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol level.
Obviously, the more intense your workout, the more calories that you will burn, and the more calories you burn, the more weight you will lose. Just dont overdo it and injure yourself.
Like with all diet and exercise plans, you should check with your doctor before undertaking them. Think of your body as having a Fat Burning Furnace. The more exercise you undertake the more you stoke the furnace and burn up the excess fat.
